    Mediation

At the beginning of my exercise I want to tell you something about the meaning of whistle blowing in modern societies such as Germany or the United States, about the advantages and disadvantages of Whistle blowing and about the alternatives to whistle blowing. At the end I will put forward a statement on the topic and tell you my opinion.

    The meaning of whistle blowing

To blow a whistle, concerning companies for instance, means to give alarm when something illegal or forbidden is taking place there. In a company this kind of alarm could be if someone informed the chairman of the company or gave away the information to the media, for example the newspaper or the local television news. But even informing the Boss might bring up problems with it, since people who are involved may be down to the publication of the illegal actions in the company, for example tax dodging. A reaction could be bullying or being threatened.

But there are still advantages for the society which whistle blowing brings with it. A whistle blower spends transparency which allows to inform the society for example about rotten meat which is in circulation. Whistle blowing could also be a deterrent to other firms or people that do illegal actions.

The other side of the medal is that a whistle blower could risk his job by publishing information about the illegal actions.
There are many cases where even the lead of a firm is actively involved, and this makes it hard to fix the problem without publishing it. If someone is purposeful to do something against the mess he mostly loses his job because of the bad protection on the part of the government. Germany is a good example for this because the judicial system for the protection of whistle blowers is still bad. But the irony is that the opposite is good secured by the judicial system. A firm could sue the whistle blower for publishing the internal secrets and a whistle blower can even get into prison for this.

A better example for a working whistle blower protection is America..Better laws such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act should guarantee protecting a whistle blower’s rights. The American society also sees it the way that whistle blowing not as denouncing and supports whistle blowing more than the Germans do.

But what are the alternatives of whistle blowing? The easiest alternative is to do nothing but the disadvantage of this may be emotional distress for saying nothing which won't help society either, for example when costumers suffer from health damage as a result..

My opinion about this topic is that doing nothing is not a real alternative but consequences which might follow for whistle blowing are even a threat too. I advise that a person who wants do something should deal with the laws and then conclude the best way.
