Introduction
IGN's report and interview with Crytek's President and CEO Cevat Yerli goes in-depth into the past, present and future of multi-platform gaming and how CryENGINE® 3 can cope within these console led markets.
The interview also addresses the doubts and fears that hardcore PC gamers have towards the view that the company is looking into other avenues and making games for consoles only. The possible lifespan of CryENGINE® 3 was also questioned, however, Cevat said "Every time a new generation of consoles come, people think it'll look like five to 10 times better than the previous generation, but once the games ship we realize there's actually not that much difference" - Just going to prove that with an engine like ours we will never ship products that look dated or old and that the time invested into the development and design of the engine will pay high dividends to any developer that chooses to work with it. Due to the engine possessing the ability of optimization for either PS3 or Xbox360 our CryENGINE® 3 is surely the stand out product of the future.
Zitat:
US, March 25, 2009 - Of the many new technologies being showcased at the Game Developers Conference 2009, one of the standouts is Crytek's CryENGINE 3. After years of focusing on the Windows PC platform with its with the original CryENGINE and Far Cry, as well as Crysis and Crysis Warhead on CryENGINE 2, Crytek is building this new engine for multiplatform use. To get some background information on what CryENGINE 3 is, a perspective on the industry in general, as well as the future of the ever-expanding Crytek empire, we talked with president and CEO Cevat Yerli.
Cevat also goes on to report that "almost all of the top 20 developers have shown interest", this statement shows the true quality of the engine, even the competition wants a piece of it! Once fully finalized and confirmed CryENGINE® 3 should be available by the third quarter of the year. Once completed plans are set in place to allow for up to ten licenses with scope to increase this number.
So what about the number one platform in the world? If you don't know yet, it's the Nintendo Wii. Cevat quotes "It's a big argument. It's like the number one platform in the world, why are you not supporting it? We're looking at it, frankly…We'll see in the future." This just goes to prove that Crytek is a dynamic company in an ever increasingly growing industry.
Steps in the right direction
With the recent acquisition of UK based developer Free Radical Cevat explains that this was a "The move for Free Radical was a logical move for us. We knew our plans for expanding into the UK, we wanted to get more expertise in certain areas."
With the current media storm surrounding the OnLive the future of online entertainment appears to be going from strength to strength, pushing forward the bounds of technology and bringing it to the ever increasing world wide audience. Games on demand may seem closer than you think; Cevat quotes "OnLive is interesting. It remains to be seen how much cost it is to serve them. Still you'll need a PC somewhere, on the server side, and it's arguable how scalable the systems are. Then again I'm looking at it from the outside, and I'm not an evangelist on that. I'm not looking at it critically either. I'm just saying let's wait and see."
The next official update to the CryENGINE® 3 is hopefully to be expected at E3, watch this space!
