Introduction
Welcome to the latest installment of the Inside Crytek series. We’ve had a bit of a break with the Holiday season and settling back In for the new year, but now we’re back on track in 2009 and we’re bringing the series back to life. For those of you that don’t know what Inside Crytek is; This is where we get up close to the team to discuss with them how they came be at Crytek, what they’re doing at the minute and whats to come. Not only that, but it’s also where you guys get the chance to ask the guys some questions and get them answered by a member of the team!
This time around for their turn in the hot seat is Eric Lagel.
What do you do at Crytek?
I am the producer of Crysis Wars.
Why did you want to work in the games industry and how did you get started? Do you have any tips for people wanting to get started in the industry?
I wanted to work in this industry because I have a passion for games. I felt I could use this passion as a fuel to deliver the most out of what I can do. I did an MBA and worked as a consultant for 4 years, and I reached a point where I figured out: do I want to build a career in consulting? The answer to this question brought me to the games industry.
Tips to get started? Understand that working in games is not playing games all day long. That’s good to be a player, but it is more important to be a professional. So learn about how games are created, figure out what kind of talents and skills are required, get trained in these areas and apply to a studio, Crytek preferably if you are good
Where have you worked before?
I started working at Air France, and then joined Accenture (the consulting firm). After that, I joined Ubisoft in Paris, and then Montreal, before coming to Crytek.
Why Crytek?
Simply because this company is one of the most dynamic and exciting companies to work for. Figure that out: nothing 10 years ago, and then Far Cry, then Crysis and Warhead; there are now studios in 5 different countries, people from all around the world work here.
What are the best and worst parts of your job?
Best part is working with a fantastic team, dedicated to give its best in order to deliver a game that’s among the best in its category. Worst part? You’ll see this as a paradox, but not finding enough time to play the competition :P
What are you working on at the minute?
Preparing the next steps for Crysis Wars and make sure that we can deliver the highest value to our players with our next deliveries.
What types of games do you like, and what's your favorite game of all time?
I like many kind of games. I used to be a hardcore RTS player, but working on Crysis, I play more FPS than I used to. Currently - how original of me -, I am simply playing WoW for the fun. I also very much enjoyed Left 4 Dead and Mirror’s Edge.
Favorite game of all time? I would have to go with WoW, but I can’t forget Age of Empires, Warcraft 3 and Battlefield 1942.
What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
Spending time with my family, especially my little daughter. And playing WoW when my family is sleeping
