Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been a huge hit for Activision despite all the controversy leading up to the game's release. Now the developer and publisher has admitted to looking at other ways to milk the Call of Duty franchise.
Speaking at the BMO Capital Markets Conference, Activision Blizzard Chief Financial Officer, Thomas Tippl said they were exploring ways to monetise online gameplay with business models similar to World of Warcraft:
... you should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetization models of some of our biggest franchises like Call of Duty.
Activision claims that this is what core fans want. While there was uproar about the increased price, and other issues such as removing dedicated servers and mods for the PC, the game still surpassed sales records.
In the meantime, Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick made US $20.2 million in a three-day stock sale by selling 2 million stock options he bought for $1.03 in 2000, for $11.51 per share last week.
