Welcome to today's news update regarding the August Update of Northern Ireland: 1983. Today, we're bringing you the culmination of nearly 2 months worth of hard work, that brought us through a lot of development, not just in game, but the plot as well. If you look at our ModDB page now, you'll see that we've gone through a complete overhaul of our artstyle, to further embed the 80's feel, and make the modification seem more professional.
Multiplayer:
As of now, we are including a multiplayer section to the modification, consisting of some 5 levels for the first release. This will likely be completed before the main story, due to the amount of work that is required on the Singleplayer.
The two sides consist of NATO Special Forces, and USSR Special Forces, keeping in the theme of the mod's setting.
In the multiplayer, there will be a choice of 4 modes:
Deathmatch: Exactly the same as IA.
Team Deathmatch: Exactly the same as TIA
Capture the Intel: Same as Capture the flag, except its a briefcase containing intelligence.
VIP: This is one of the interesting ones. One team must protect an AI ViP whilst travelling to a specific point, whilst the other must assassinate him.
Gameplay Systems In Development:
At present, we are developing several new systems, and involving elements from other modifications that are already available to the public. Firstly, we are developing a Custom Weather System, via a combination of C++, and Flowgraphing - this is likely to take some 6 months due to the complexity of the code involved, but the end result of the battlefield changing atmosphere, and as a result, the way you tackle objectives, should be worth it. We are also working on producing an Advanced AI, similar to the version that has already been released to fit the modification - unfortunately, Crysis's AI doesn't quite fufill what we need for our story to come alive - and yet again, this is likely to take a large amount of development time, unless we are able to aquire assistance for these tasks. Finally, and probably the most important out of those three developments, is Close Combat. This is a combination of Animation, and coding work that has to be done, but is vital for the modification to work correctly - in particular, in regards to close combat weapons, such as the Ka-Bar, or even unarmed combat, not to mention, stealth kills. All of these are main components of the modification, and will hopefully bring our idea to life, and more playable.
Concept Art:
I'd like to present the work of Shimmering Sword, one of our talented concept artists, whose been developing the appearance of Blue Team's members, and is our lead in regards to character design for the modification. You can find more information on Blue Team in this ModDB article here, and more of Shimmering Sword's work here.

Modelling & Texturing:
Next up, one of our new modellers that joined us at the start of the month, Can5, has produced this wonderful model of the AKM - commonly used by terrorist organisations the world over, and is a steadfast, sturdy, and above all, reliable weapon. In game the player will be able to use a GP-25, along with a silencer with the weapon, making it a deadly weapon in the right hands.

Badcop also recently joined us, and has been churning out models for us at an amazing rate, to a very high standard. First up, is the M16-A2, a weapon that was the mainstray of the SAS and SBS during the 70's, 80's and early 90's, before being replaced with the Candian C8. During the game, this is one of the most customisable weapons available to the player, and a good balance of firepower, and accuracy.

Next, we have the FN Minimi - also known as the M249 SAW in American service, and the L108A1 in British Service - again produced by Badcop. A weapon that is standardly used to lay down immense levels of covering fire in support of a section - a very valuable weapon on any operation, and particularly if fitted with a sight - which the player will have the option to do.

As Badcop's final contribution to this month's update, we have the M61 Fragmentation grenade that was in use by British forces for some two decades, along with American forces during Vietnam. Also, we have the Ka-Bar combat knife, one of the knives that will be available to the player to use.

To finish the Modelling & Texturing section of this update, Jason's work on the .38 Special and Remington Shotgun are up for viewing, and bring the models to life properly thanks to Jason's skills.

Darkness Map:
This is the map entitled "Darkness" by its creator, Sensman. This is going to be an important part of the modification, but I'm not going into depth about where it will be, and what its purpose is til the full update. No matter how much you ask, I shalt say nothing of what it says. Even if String comes along and smacks me upside the face.
Anyway, yes, these were created by new team member, Sensman, who is creating several maps for the modification.

Northern Ireland 1983 - October Update
Zitat von http://crystalwolfstudios.com/
by Squiggers (TeamLeader)
Welcome to todays update. I apoligise for the fact that we put this news update out 5 days after we said we would, but due to illness on my part along with connection issues with some of the team, resulting in renders of work being a bit slower to get to me for the update. Either way, heres this months update, and I hope you like what we've got to show you.
= MODELLING & TEXTURING =
First up for this updates Modelling & Texturing section, is the work of George Sokol whos been working tirelessly on the Landrover Series III. This was, and still is for many states, a workhorse of the army - versatile, cheap, and durable. For the mod, we've produced 3 flavours - soft top, hard top, and Makrolon armour. This beast of burden is able to carry several people, along with equipment, due to its large size, and passenger/equipment area in the back. (From personal experiance, you want a hardhat if you end up sat in the back of one of these, particularly when bouncing round a quarry in. I've still got the dents in my skull, I think.) The Landrover Series III may seem like a fairly simple, and sparse vehicle, but it is definately not a vehicle that its worth playing "Chicken" with, particularly if you're in a smaller, less powerful vehicle, or worse, on foot.
Spoiler Pics:
As you can see from the below shots, the softop version consists of a metal frame covered over by canvas. As you might have guessed, this is the least well armoured out of the types available to the player, but probably the quickest overall due to the decrease in weight due to the canvas. This is primarily seen as a civilian jeep, but is also sometimes used by military and paramilitary forces alike.
Spoiler Pics:
Next, we have the hardtop version. As you can see, there is a solid metal frame covering the vehicle, providing more protection than a softopped vehicle - but theres little this can do against armour piercing rounds, much the same as any civilian grade vehicle - or at least, an unarmoured one. This is somewhat more better protected than the softop, but nowhere near as well as that Makralon armoured version, but is still faster than the armoured Landrover.
Spoiler Pic:
We at last come to this vehicle's final variant, the Landrover Makralon, or as it was effectionatly known, the "Piglet" in relation to its larger cousin, the Humber Pig. This is the best protected out of all the landrovers, being entirely cased in Makralon armour, along with utilising new perspex glass for the side, and back windows. RPG mesh also covers the windows to protect the occupants from an RPG attack, with the mesh predetonating the warhead. This was near enough This Landrover served as the British armed forces Snatch Landrover in Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Spoiler Pics:
Now moving onto one of the numerous organic projects that has to be undertaken to produce the new models for our production, we have Alex Jupp's work on the SAS CRW kit - which is better known as "The Black Kit". The design for this was based primarily on the gear worn by the 1981 Iranian Embassy assualters, with some of our own features put in. We're still putting some changes in, such as the gasmask, and bulking out the chest to demonstrate body armour being worn.
Spoiler Pic:
As part of this model, Alex needed a Browning Hi-Power Pistol. Unforunately, Robin, one of our primary weapon modellers hadn't quite finished working on the ingame Browning, so Alex had a go at making one himself - as you can see, it turned out absolutely brilliantly. I'd like to say here that Robin's work is still going in game, and this model with be used primarily for cutscenes that require that extra bit of detail, or focus on the Browning more.
Spoiler Pics:
To finish off this months Modelling & Texturing section, we have work by our new 3D Lead, Austin W. Firstly, we have his work on the Welrod pistol - while it was designed in WW2 for British/Guerrilla forces to eliminate targets quietly, it was in reportedly in use right up until the Gulf War by the SAS. Make no mistake - for such a simple, and quite frankly, ugly looking gun, its perhaps one of the deadliest assassination weapons available, with the firing noise being less than that of the user loading the weapon - something that isn't replicated by any firearm today.
Spoiler Pics:
Austin has also been working hard on texturing up some of the assets that he made for the last update - the Ka-bar combat knife, and the M61 frag grenade. Both of these have been rendered in the Marmosett Toolkit, a lovely bit of kit. (I'm aware that the base of the M61 frag is somewhat octagonal, but it doesn't matter. It'd be rather unwise to stand looking at it when one flies towards you.)
Spoiler Pics:
= LEVEL DESIGN =
This month, we bring you the very first shots of our single player campaign, which is currently tightly under wraps for the most part. These shots are of the level based in County Antrim, which is being built by Kai Vuellings. As of yet, this level is still requiring quite a chunk of work on it, mainly on the small village/town area, primarily getting the textures getting completed for the buildings, hence why they aren't displayed in these shots.
= NEW SITE =
For those of you that have had a look at our site recently, you'll see that we're reworking our site a lot - we've got to the stage where we've built up a lot of work, and pages on the site based on Wordpress. We're still working on the site to get everything smooth, and unbuggy, and an even nicer design is coming soon for the site. We've got all the information on the current project, links to partners, the team listing, and our news page, which often updates every 2-4 days, and has regular information on what we're working on. You can check it out at the links at the end of this post.
Well, thats all for this update, thanks for reading, and I hope you'll join us again in a week for our #2 Dev Diary.
