In my opinion, the best way to realise this is to join a modding team first. You can learn really much about the engines, how a game engine works, and how you can create your own objects, maps, scripts aso.. Because some basic knowledge could be useful.
In addition you will agree contacts to other professionel members who can help you in your future projects eventually.
But it's your decision.

Hm maybe you, make some higher education in a Fachhochschule or something...
Well, the best thing of getting precise answeres it to ask people in a company wich developes games, or maybe the G..M.E group can help?
One chance to get work in a firm is experience, so go into Mod teams and so on... as PlatinumGold just said.
Making your own game should not be that easy way, but maybe you sucess, i would firstly talk with Game Designers!
I hope i could help :)

I have the perfect tool for ya.
It's called XNA and is completly free to download (http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/xna/gse/). You also need Visual C# Express (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualcsharp/), which is also free.
After you downloaded and installed both programms you can start very very easily to write your first game. Just watch one of the video-tutorials (http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/xna/videos/).
