Crysis Mod: Obsidian Edge II: Theatre of War
Today we will officially announce Obsidian Edge II: Theatre of War. It is another chosen Crysis modification which will work with a pre-SDK and receives support from Crytek. Below you can find a description of the project itself:

Obsidian Edge II: "Theatre of War" (working title) is the groundbreaking sequel to Obsidian Edge being created for Crytek's up coming first person shooter Crysis. With intense realism as well as new game features never before seen in a first person shooter - it will forever change the way you think a first person shooter should be played.
Get ready for edge-of-your-seat action - You will be required to lead assaults on enemy held positions, seek out and eliminate hostiles, perform coordinated missions, and fight for your own survival. In each case you will need to outfit your squad with the proper weapons and equipment, carefully plan your actions with your team, and then execute your plan in order to achieve the objective.
The world of Obsidian Edge is extremely unforgiving. Be ready to test your nerves, tactics and skill against opponents who are just as determined to eliminate you as you are to eliminate them. As your skills sharpen, so do theirs. As your strategy changes, so does theirs. As your teammates rush in, so do theirs. As you put them in your crosshairs, they do the same to you.

The Obsidian Edge II (OE2) Mod will include many of the features first demonstrated in OE1, with additional features to intensify the gaming experience in quality, size and scope. OE2 is the next logical evolution of realistic tactical gaming, with features including:

Multiple classes of soldiers, each with unique weapons and abilities.
Weapons, kit selections and ammo load-outs are balanced and realistic.
A customizable weapons system will be implemented.
Bullet damage spin - when hit by a bullet, your aim is realistically affected by the impact.
Injuries affect player abilities.
Realistic Walk speeds and run speeds.
Realistic damage models and lasting effects.
Multiple unique vehicle types for a new game experience and more intense tactical battles.
Easy start up for new & casual players - get in the action fast!
Multiplayer Gameplay
Maps will range from massive with vehicle support to small with no vehicles.
Several multiplayer game types including: Team Elimination, Protect the VIP, Team Demolition, Team Domination, and Free For All.
Player lives can be limited from one to infinite server-side.
Full Mapcycle control and other server options facilitates unattended dedicated servers.
Buddy / Jerk system for finding your buddys on-line and avoiding those you don't want to play with. (Tentative)
Integrated squad voice communications. (Tentative)
Cooperative Gameplay
Cooperative multiplayer gameplay modes will be available on most of the multiplayer maps. Play against the AI with your friends.
Other Key Features
Integrated Map Download Feature - Additional maps can be downloaded and automatically installed without leaving the game itself.
Integrated Server Control Screen - All commands can be routed to either the local machine (non-dedicated server) or to remote (dedicated) servers.

We are a mature group looking for mature individuals that work well in a team setting, and have experience in the role that they are applying for. Be prepared to share examples of your work, as well as the amount of time you are willing/able to commit. Signing a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with Crytek is required for these positions.

Der is einfach der Hammer schlecht hin und macht n heiden Spaß, und wir alle lieben ihn und daddeln ihn auch lieber als BF2 selbst, auch wenn wa da in der 4on4 spielen!

Also it features the first of our finished models, including an M67 Fragmentation Grenade, an M84 Stun Grenade, an Mk.23 Mod 0 sidearm and the centre piece for this release, the Leopard 2A6 Battle Tank, which absolutely took my breath away.

die polygongrenzen in crysis sind enorm hoch, zb, haben die fahrzeuge rund 65000 polygone, was man gut hier sehen kann:

genauso hat sich natürlich auch die texturgrösse deutlich verbessert, und in crysis wirst du keine 512 texturen mehr finden, da können wir uns alle auf was mächtig geniales gefasst machen :wink:

30k muss doch nicht zu wenig sein, wenn man gut moddeln kann, ausserdem kann man ja heute durch polybumb etc, noch ne menge mehr aus kleinen polygonzahlen machen, aber crytek will bei crysis halt einfach mal alles extrem haben 8)

mmh, da hat man noch nichts zu gesagt, aber ich würde so für ne pistol 4k-5k schätzen, aufwendigere waffen halt mehr, aber wenn du ne mod machen willst, solltest du polybumb lernen, ist echt was richtig feines :wink:

I plan to build a good SP Map. Maybe a MOD at later time. But as you said... time is a problem and to find others which can help/support you.
I can build good maps (I think ;)), import 3D Studio MAX models (static) and add extern textures to my maps BUT scripting and creating dynamic models (new monsters for example) is not my strengh.
In case that the Crysis editor is similar to the FarCry editor, I'll have more fun with maping than with playing :cool:. It was the same with FarCry ;).

sieht doch schon recht fett aus, die render aus der ce1, aber hoffentlich verbessert sich noch die polyanzahl in der ce2, dass sieht noch recht arm aus, für crysis verhältnisse, aber daskommt sicher noch, die waffen und fahrzeug render waren ja auch schön detailliert, wenn sie dass beim environment auch hinkriegen, und die gametypes von der community gut angenommen werden, steht einem oft gespielten mod nichts mehr im wege.
auch cool zu hören, dass sie crysis beta testen, bin gespannt, wie der mp in der retail später laüft :)

Ich denke es ist nur das SDK gemeint, nicht das Spiel selbst.
While it is a great honour to be selected to utilise the Crysis Pre-SDK, we also are effectively beta testing it for Crytek, so the going can often be slow.

Correct guys, through our development we are beta testing the SDK/SB2/Engine, we are not officially testing the game (Crysis).

We will be releasing more images as they become available, hopefully at 30 to 45 day intervals, along with more details on the new game modes.
I cant say for sure when we will be able to release the CE2 renders, but as soon as we can, trust me we wont be holding them back :P

The Polishing Weevils, makers of Obsidian Edge 2 – an officially supported Crysis mod have kindly answered some questions regarding the development of their mod, the Sandbox tool and their relationship with Crytek.
Also released are two new renders by Stefan Morrell.
From your updates, it appears that the overall development of OE2 is progressing well. While we don’t have a concrete release date for Crysis, is it still you intention to deliver OE2 a few months after its official release?
Absolutely!
One of our biggest regrets was that OE1 released so long after Far Cry was launched. As a result a whole generation of players had already moved on, mostly never to return. By releasing within a few months of Crysis, we hope to give some time for people to enjoy Crysis in all its glory, and then be ready for something a little different (OE2).
You’ve announced a few different game types - is there is particular focus on a single game type that you see being a sort of unique crown performer? (…much like Power Struggle in Crysis)
While there is a trend in the industry at the moment to have a defining game mode, you are, to a degree, putting all your eggs in one basket. We feel that since so many game types have binding elements, producing a strong core mechanic and branching into varied game types still seams to be a worthwhile investment.
Each of the new/revised game modes are unique, each will have their own appeal. Almost all of them are designed to be E-Sports friendly. If you are looking for a comparison, with power struggle, then I suppose that it would have to be All Out War, which we will cover in detail in the coming months, but it is essentially a large scale battle where the control of key areas will provide realistic benefits to the team, that will promote some intriguing strategies. We really cannot wait to play this mode ourselves!
Can you elaborate more on why OE2 is considered a "consequential" form of game play? Can you detail a particular scenario where this would be vividly existent?
Well, in one scenario, imagine squad of 5 where player A is asked by the squad leader to cover your right flank. That player decides that covering the flank is boring, he wants to climb the hill behind so he can snipe the enemy and rack up a mountain, if you will excuse the pun, of kills. The consequence of his decision is that his team’s flank is unprotected and their position is overrun without any warning by an attack from that side. The team loses the round, the players will suffer a global scoring penalty because of the defeat. We have had long and detailed discussions to see if we can find a way to individually penalize the person responsible, and we are trying to get a fair balance, which only extensive play testing can validate.
In the reverse scenario, a team mate is wounded to the extent that they cannot move from the cover point they are in. The teams are finely balanced, but the wounded player is actually one of your best men. Three choices exist: (1) Ignore the player; (2) Administer first-aid only (Medic); (3) Transport the player back to the Field Hospital for full recovery. Through your medic initially performing first aid and then returning the player to the field hospital, he can receive sufficient treatment to rejoin the game in a more effective manner. As a result of the medical treatment, you are able to bring your full team skills to bear and win an unlikely victory. The team, the medic and the wounded soldier will receive positive recognition for their team and individual successes.
What sort of support is Crytek providing? To what degree will Crytek influence and shape the overall feel of the mod?
Crytek are providing technical advice for the new engine and some PR support through the mirroring of our updates on Crymod. While our primary contact is Alexander Marschal, Crytek’s Community Manager, we also have access to their modelers, coders and map makers. We hope in the long run to receive more assistance from EA Games, so far our liaison with them has been limited to being featured on their German Crysis Community site following our interview with www.CrysisNews.de
During discussions with respect to receiving this exclusive access to the Pre-SDK, Crytek described their vision for the Crysis MP games, and asked whether we could synergistically dovetail in to provide alternatives to them. With Obsidian Edge 1 as an example of our work, and through our already well advance Design Document, we were able to demonstrate a clear road map for the direction that OE2 would take. We are pleased to say that Crytek appear to have agreed with our feeling that we ticked the right boxes!
Without disclosing anything specific, how are you finding the Pre-SDK compares to the CryEngine Sandbox 1? Has the transition been a smooth one?
So far, the transition is going smoothly, as we have mentioned in the past, Crytek have been providing us with new revisions of the SDK as and when they have new functionality. Regular users of SB1 should have no difficulty in learning to use SB2.
Is there anything you would recommend to those developing non official Crysis Mods without the Pre-SDK tool and other key fundamental technical understandings so as not to waste development time?
Yes, but unfortunately not just yet...
We are going to be releasing an interview we have worked on with Crytek in the run up to GDC; we hope that will provide some clear guidance to teams not in our privileged position.
You’ve had some difficulties in the past with changeovers in the staff. How challenging has it been to recruit and manage such a range of staff members with such diverse skill sets?
It’s been challenging on occasions!
The need for staff changeovers was unfortunate but unavoidable, On a team this size (25+) you will eventually run into conflicts that need to be resolved. While some people are no longer part of the team, we wish them well and thank them for their contributions towards making Obsidian Edge so keenly anticipated by the Crysis community.
The recruiting process is more labour intensive than we envisaged!
Like a sporting franchise manager, you can imagine us starting off with a few transfer targets that we wanted on the team, and happily we managed to get most of them, even if we had to wait a while for some that were busy on other projects. Then there was the sheer weight of public applications that needed screening initially for quality. We are very conscious of the unique position we are in and while the Non-Disclosure-Agreement (NDA) that each individual has to sign protects Crytek and their IPR, each applicant was interviewed on several occasions to ensure that they were likely to add to the team on both professional and personal levels.
Are there opportunities for someone wanting to get involved with the development of OE2?
Well, the actual design has been pretty solid for almost a year now, but obviously it will remain flexible until we have sufficiently play tested Obsidian Edge 2. At this point we are still recruiting experienced animators and weapons modelers (portfolio required). Following the release of Crysis we may expand our team for closed beta testing ahead of public release.
Some Mods have become hugely popular due to their intuitive game play and mass market appeal. What sort of strategy are you taking to ensure that OE2 receives the true appreciation and fame that it deserves?
There has been a huge attention to detail applied at all stages of the design, residing on the Cryengine2, an amazing platform, Obsidian Edge 2 will be a unique game that satisfies the growing expectations of the modern gamer.
We know we are going to produce a game that will have long lasting appeal for us, and hopefully for the fans we have picked up along the way. Another aspect of our strategy is the aforementioned timing of the release. Where OE1 had about 100,000 downloads, we anticipate five to ten times as many downloads for OE2, which we hope will result in a much larger community of players. Will we achieve that critical mass that sees a game make the transition from the numbers that play Far Cry to the numbers that play BF2? We certainly hope so, and we are doing our best to get as much public recognition for Obsidian Edge 2 as possible ahead of the release. One area we have struggled in so far is catching the eye of the gaming press. We hope that as we release more details, and with a little help from our friends we will make it impossible for them to ignore us any longer.

das liegt auch daran,dass nun Crytek bekannt und erfahrener sind!
Im Zeichen eines Interviews der polnischen Kollegen von ObsidianEdge.net mit den Mannen von Crytek, sind nun vier neue Screenshots des Crysis Sandbox 2-Editors aufgetaucht. Des Weiteren gibt es in dem Interview neue Details zur CryEngine 2. Der Edelshooter Crysis wird zurzeit auf Basis der begehrten Engine entwickelt.

Like most of you, I have seen all of the videos and thought I knew what I was going to be experiencing. I was wrong. Everything you've seen so far cannot prepare you for the feel of being in this game. You think you know what it's going to feel like...you're wrong. It's overwhelming...I was literally stunned. It does not feel like any game ever made. Watching one player cap a sniper and then couldn't find the weapon in the underbrush...unbelievable.
Well, that really makes me impatient ^^

Die Screens sind alle sehr sexy - auch wenn man kein Crysis mögen sollte, sind solche Modifikationen auch ein Grund sich Crysis zuzulegen!
die screens zeigen eindrucksvoll was man mit der cryengine2 noch so machen kann ausser jungel levels! das dürfte bestimmt viele leute ansprechen, die mit palmen nix am hut haben wollen!

Im struggling with the translations there, but yes, we will release shortly after Crysis (60-90 Days)
We have a track record from OE1 and the butchering of Far Cry in patch 1.4 ;)
We were the 1st independent team to be selected by Crytek for access to the Crysis PreSDK.
Our progress is dictated by the functionallity of the builds we receive from Crytek... We are not in a position to show in game footage yet, but as MikeM says, there are in engine screen caps.

Not sure; when you say solid tool, do you mean SB2 in engine modeller?
At the end of the day, all a model is is the frame and the texture, so if a modlling tool supports this then yes.
Most modellers tend to prefer a dedicated tool and they have their own preferences.
Our guys use a combination of tools, Pros like Stefan us 3ds Max, others use Maya, Zbrush, Vray etc and those who cant afford to buy use the XSI tool.

your mod is almost the only one i am really interested in! I hope the multiplayer part is geared to the Project Reality Mod (Battlefield 2) a little bit. Great work!
looks awesome. The ability to turn a scene into a totally atmosphere using different lighting really helps I guess... :)
Are all or at least some of these buildings hollow so one can actually enter them and snipe out the windows? That would make it even more attractive.

Introduction
Obsidian Edge 2 is a multi-player total conversion modification for Crysis, but most probably Crysis Wars, and it is developed by the Polishing Weevils Development team. It is a tactical shooter focused on realism and a strong emphasis has been placed on teamwork.
Obsidian Edge 2 goes Alpha
The OE2 team has currently entered the internal alpha stage and has laid out plans for their future beta releases as well. As of right now, their plan is to conduct phased beta testing, when the time is right. Each trailing patch will contain additional new content, allowing us to release once the core game is ready to be played. The plan looks something like this:
Internal Alpha - Team only; iron out the major bugs
Closed Beta - Invitation only; Iron out minor bugs and game play issues
Open Beta - Hopefully focused more on game play though I am sure some bugs will slip through.
Release - Monitor for bugs
Patch - Fix bugs and release additional content, will require additional beta test
Where do you, the gaming community fit in?
There is actually a lot you, the public can do to help move Obsidian Edge along. They will of course need beta testers when the time comes, but please understand that what they really need are real, high quality testers, especially at first. they will be looking for people that have previous beta testing experience and who they will be able to get solid feedback from. Beta tester applications can be found here. ich bin da (leider!) etwas skeptisch. Es wäre doch ne Kleinigkeit für die, regelmäßig Bildmaterial zu veröffentlichen aus Maps etc. So gaarnix seit Monaten ist doch ein schlechtes Zeichen. Wäre sehr schade, wenn die kein Bock mehr hätten. OE2 war eigentlich mein Favorit.

vorallem der MP Teil interessiert mich wie die das alles einbinden wollen, sprich das des dann so richtig funzt...^^
ich sehs schon, am Ende kann es dann keiner spielen, weil so viel Leistung für das Health System gebraucht wird xD
ne Spaß...
mal schauen was für Levels und so kommen werden :-D bestimmt solche netten "Gassen" Fights wie bei CS (hab es damals wie WoW gezockt xD....jetzt nimmer :D bzw. zock es gar nicht mehr)

Today we have a long awaited update from the Polishing Weevils Pre-SDK Mod Team (http://www.crymod.com/moddbslist.php?id=66) regarding their Multiplayer Total Conversion Modification entitled Obsidian Edge 2. Move to Crysis Wars
Late last year we took a poll of the active team members, it was unanimous, we should switch to the Crysis Wars version of the SDK once it was released. The reasons were straight forward:
Better optimised engine
A larger player base than Crysis
Help promote the Crysis Wars community
Completed Features In Code
On a coding front prior to the release of the Crysis Wars SDK release, 80% of the core Obsidian Edge features are now coded. We are currently in the process of porting over this code and do not forsee any problems in doing so. Along with the confirmed features we can also confirm that two new gamemodes are coded and are in beta testing; Team Elimination and Enemy Territory game types. These gametype F.A.Q.'s can be found on our website, www.obsidianedge.net The complete features list currently includes:

While Gizmo has made a stunning start on the team, he needs all the help we can get!
3D modellers Environments, Weapons and Vehicles
You name it we still need it modelled, if you are professional, committed and your work is of the highest calibre, then we have a place on the team for you, all that we ask is that you be able to texture your own work.
2D Artists
We have revised 'work in progress' in game menus and HUDs, but what we really need is a talented 2D artist to give them that professional finish.

Work In Progress Level Hunted
A level brifely featured in this update is the map entitled Hunted being created by team member Beloved Monster. This map will take advantage of the vegetation CryEngine2 beautifully displays. This map will be set where a farm meets a forest and should provide intense gameplay over rolling hills and thick woodlands. Below we have a couple screenshots showing a small scene for Hunted showcasing a barn hut modelled and textured by team member Spacehoshi.

Work In Progress Level Dunes
One of the main focuses of this update is the map entitled Dunes and is being created by myself, Osok, and is a level placed in the middle eastern envrionment. The difference from most levels desert levels is that Dunes is a merchant's town in the middle of the desert, not a large city. This town is where travellers stop for rest, water, and the ability to trade and purchase goods. The goal of this level is to provide players with close combat battles along with the ability to use multiple story huts and buildings to give the more stealthy players a way to control the town. Below we will show you concept art first followed by some work in progress models and a couple in-engine screenshots.

Mayor's Mansion
In most small town's there is usually one man or woman who has power, fame, and riches over everyone else in the town. This particular mayor has all of those things and is more than willing to show off what he has. Below are some screenshots with some glimpses of the mayor's mansion and his luxurious decor in his bathroom although it has been weathered down since the battle over the city has begun. This mansion and props are being done by team member Pumba.

We are switching to a phased release approach. What does that mean? Well in the first instance it means that the intitial release, while containing all core OE features, will only ship with two gameplay modes and 3 maps.

Sehr, sehr schade, da stirbt mal wieder etwas ganz grosses. Hätten ja wenigstens die Archivements rausgeben können, die schöne Arbeit. Andere Frage, was ist denn aus Petrowgrad geworden. (bin jetzt nur zu Faul zu suchen;-) )

Ja. Ich glaube das war sogar eines der wenigen Teams, die das Pre Mod SDK hatten.
Tja also die Screens als heiße Luft zu bezeichnen ist dann vllt. dennoch etwas krass, aber im Prinzip weis ich was du meinst und geb dir da auch recht. Leider wird immer viel angekündigt und dann schlussendlich nix gehalten. Sehr schade drum, aber dafür gibts ja schon andere tolle Mods, die vllt. nicht so groß sind aber dafür released wurden.

Das ist bei den meisten so, ja, aber ich denke, die kannst du hier nicht als Beispiel nehmen.
Das waren Veteranen, die wussten, was das für eine Arbeit ist. Immerhin haben sie für FarCry damals Obsidian Edge I released. Und da anfangs größtenteils die Leute des alten Teams dabei waren, war es wohl auch nicht wild zusammengesetzt.
Das Problem ist eben, das sich heute im privaten Bereich sehr schnell sehr viel ändern kann. Wenn man da noch ein ambitioniertes Nebenprojekt am Laufen hat, würde ich auch wissen, wo ich die Prioritäten zu setzen habe. Auch wenn das heißt, dass ich mich bis auf Weiteres von meinen Hobbys verabschiede. Es gibt einfach wichtigeres.
